I'm as fan of this song as they might be Paul McCartney. "God Only Knows" is the pinnacle of the Beach Boys. And that's saying a lot. The "Pet Sounds" is an album that is growing with the passage of time. The main voice of Carl Wilson in "God Only Knows" puts the meat of chicken. The vocal harmonies and arrangements are incredible and the lyrics are simple and emotive. The reference to God is not free. It is a spiritual song that shakes, you put a lump in the throat, which lets you surrendered at the feet of Beauty.
Paul Thomas Anderson showed his good taste in music including it in a very significant sequence of "Boogie Nights".
