Moonwalker (1988)

If there is a character as anyone that illustrates the concept of "broken toy" within the cultural landscape that is, without doubt, Michael Jackson. Before it exploded in the face of it scandals ruin social, artistic and economically, Jackson was as close to a deity who had walked through the world since time of the Roman emperors. Their power, influence and popular hitch were so great that, to give just one example, in the Fall of 1991 until the very U2 decided to delay a month the launch of its new LP, the only outstanding Achtung Baby, for his production of no longer coincide with that of Dangerous.

Against this background, it's not surprising the huge excitement produced when it was learned that Michael Jackson was starring in a film. Even the most insignificant details were kept secret until the last minute. Thus, when the producer began to allow leaks to the press about what was being baking, the film was in the mouth around the world and had insured the success, despite the fact that in the United States would only be marketed on video. Outside there, however, it would appear on the big screen, and suffice it to say that when the premiere approached, the Spanish Television scheduled to premiere the video for Smooth Criminal (which served as a trailer for lodging) in peak hours. What followed was a state of collective madness among the fans as not recalled from the Beatles, with cinemas whose queue for tickets was a couple of rounds at the building and shouting and deafening inside the hall, which barely allowed to hear anything during the screening.

All this might make more of a drop socarrona a smile, as the future of the years has meant that Jackson has gone from being the object of admiration and respect of being a mockery and ridicule. And when one dares with the movie, undoubtedly one of the most insane exercises movie ever filmed. The thing is a big star of the music (you guess who it is) that, between songs, is dedicated to fighting a powerful henchman of the evil step and demonstrate her love for children (sic). To summarize: we have to have balls of steel to be able to swallow whole Moonwalker, because apart from the video clips (of which we will talk a little later) the film is bad as the worst sin. What was at the time (to me at least I did not like nothing at all) not to mention now, with its protagonist into the shade (if it) of what a day it was. Still, one can draw conclusions very interesting viewing, beginning with the fact that never again shoot a film like this because there are no musical superstars of the caliber of Michael. Leaving aside his case, well known at this stage, a day who competed with him in particular Olimpo of the "charts" are also no longer what they were, and the poor devils who now pollute with his presence the top of the hit would not be the millionth part of what Michael was not even lived twenty lives row.

In the case of Moonwalker this note in the plot that Jackson better audiovisual dominated: the video clips. It is here where the King of Pop says, "Here I am, what happens?" But there we have it, turned into success and achieving that even today more than an absurd Hum and his machacón chorus after listening. And it goes without saying that the clip that accompanies it is very well done, but you can not expect less in a tape shot in full apotheosis of the genre, also starring one of the musicians who knew more match to get through the budget. A particular title I stick with Leave me alone, genuine public statement full of nasty against the absurdity of media harassment, wrapped with a music as catchy and, for the opportunity at hand, a video clip of the most spectacular, authentic Monument to the techniques of "stop-motion". Perhaps the best thing about the movie.

Although Michael Jackson could say many things and not all just good (also on the parcel artistic addition to the staff), no one can call into question what it was, his influence on popular music and his legacy, including this Moonwalker. Yes, OK: it is an "on" that distills an egocentric narcissism worthy of a doctoral thesis of psychiatry, and that is a top bodrio hardly bearable if we forget the video clips. But it is a true reflection of a few years, 80, who went to pop music what the 90 to the world of fashion and that, whether we like it or not, had moments of greatness that will never be repeated.
