Dogville (2003)
Director: Lars Von Trier
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Paul Bettany, Harriett Anderson, Lauren Bacall
Many espectación has aroused the latest draft of Lars Von Trier, the Danish director, from its beginnings in the pilot project Dogma, has been gaining a reputation of making films based intelligent, original, exciting and daring on the other hand, who knew that Nicole Kidman was chosen to star in the film enthusiasm spilled over, Kidman, since its separation from Tom Cruise for not linking major projects and no less great interpretations.
Still, with such espectación, Trier has not opted for a comfortable or easy film, but on the contrary, the bet is original and risky.
Dogville is a small community somewhere in the mountains in the USA, there lived a few people who have a quiet life but not without some problems together and that upsets the balance of the community, Bill is a young writer who likes to reflect and philosophize about the human condition, on the society, just and ethical.
One night Grace arrives in Dogville, a beautiful young woman who fled some gangsters seek refuge in the house of Bill, the next day is put before the community should give shelter to Grace in Dogville, taking into account the threat posed by the Mafia still looking for that, Grace, after a margin of confidence, will be accepted in the village, but the increasingly frequent visits by the police and the gangsters in Dogville iran Grace being in a situation increasingly uncomfortable with the residents of the community.
The first thing that catches the attention is powerfully the staging, Dogville (the people) is just a decoration that is not even that decorated the homes are painted with stripes on the ground that the limit, and only appear as real furniture, in this scenario, just a few square meters, is where the story, it gives the feeling of being in a play or some sort of performance, giving prominence in this way all the characters, Grace and Bill are the key elements, the distinct elements as the other characters are moving block, they are the community of Dogville and decided to do what the group, understanding and solidarity sometimes cruel and perverse others.
Dogville, is a bitter reflection on the human condition, in which it does not come out very well stop, Grace is a noble man who gradually loses its nobility, dignity, humanity and the more you are dealing with the villagers, Grace is shown as to the other, without hiding their strengths and weaknesses in an honest attempt to integrate change but receives only scorn, abuse and evil, so that eventually the character of Grace will river.
The film shows two different positions, two different approaches to the problem, Grace acts while Bill thinks, Dogville does not allow either of the two positions and both will eventually succumb to the power, before the weight of hatred and fear, that if at least Grace Revenge can be done, accomplished and well-deserved.
In short, we face a difficult film, surprising, exciting and hard, with great originality, a risky gamble Von Trier recommended especially for faithful followers of the director and looking for people in the cinema a reason to reflect.
