Great songs (III): Streets Of Your Town

Tuesday 9 May 2006

I consider this one of the great songs from Go-Betweens, the fundamental group in the pop of'80, one of the most influential and that paradoxically never succeeded in highlighting the lists of success. Authors of songs seemingly harmless, but loaded with various forms of shock Rebellion and staff.
Start the history of the group when Robert Foster and Grant McLennan are known in Brisbane (Australia) in 1978. Release their first album in 1981 and Eve in 1989 after a decade of recordings and six good albums to their credit they decide to put an end point, tired of the low profitability of trade.
The album "Tallulah" (1987) puts them first in the UK lists. The following year with "16 Lovers Lane" arrives at a checkpoint 81, his greatest achievement in the lists. From this record will benefit as single 'Streets of your town,' but they end up sinking his failure, poor performance and eventually making a dent despite compose best songs ever, the relationship between them will go away and try to push their differences solo.
In their separate work not only decreases the inspiration, but are seen perfectly both sides of the group. On the one hand brings Robert discs with a greater variety of styles, a deep and calm, with a touch grandiose, another with simple arrangements and instrumentation low, another country with air and all versions, to move to a more solidity and forcefulness in SECTION Rhythmic. Grant McLennan however we remain complimentary and sweet pop gems that always characterized him, sometimes with more success than others. His poetry book offers a more humble than that of his partner, but equally valid and rich in nuances more personal.
Match point in meetings for performances and recordings, and will get a unanimous recognition after the publication of the last studio album together in "Oceans Apart" (2005).
These lines serve as a recognition and appreciation with the recent news of the death of Grant McLennan.
