Perfect songs (II): Love Will Tear Us Apart

Wednesday, 25 May 2005

On May 18 met 25 years since Ian Curtis took their own lives, starting at that time the dark legend about Joy Division that has come unscathed until today. The history of the group of Manchester has been analyzed and reviewed thousands of times, but still remains hidden the ultimate reason that led to Ian Curtis to end his life, the source of so much devastation, so much suffering.
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" was recorded for the first time in 1979 by John Peel in the studios of the BBC, Joy Division had just published "Unknown Pleasures" and were loaded on an extensive European tour, however the issue was not published as single until April 1980, when "Closer", the second disc of the band was already over.
Joy Division's music is characterized by its crudeness, by their violence, for its chaotic forcefulness, but "Love Will Tear Us Apart" is clearly, clearly, a theme of love, a stark reflection on love in which Curtis is shown For the first time, fully vulnerable.
All biographers agree that those dreadful phrases ( "And we're changing our ways, taking different roads. Then love, love will tear us apart again") were addressed to his wife Deborah Curtis in which he felt increasingly alienated , Feeling increasingly immersed in loneliness and despair.
"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is a subject quite different from anything that Joy Division recorded, a song cut eminently classic that opens with an intro of guitar, bass and drums quite dynamic that leads to the unmistakable synth melody that brand development of the entire song. Curtis, saliendose somewhat from his usual coolness and distancing addresses here a tremendously warm and painfully human.
When the issue came as a single ahead of "Closer", was received timidly beyond the influence of Factory, but months later would become the ultimate testament of a band, Joy Division, and a man, Ian Curtis, converted a symbol and martyr to a generation.

When the routine bites hard and ambitions are low
And the rancor flying high but emotions do not grow
And we change our ways, taking different paths
    Love, love tear us again

Why is the bedroom so cold, giving you back?
Is my pace so flawed, our respect so exhausted?
Although still endure this attraction we have saved all the life
    Love, love tear us again

¿Screaming in your sleep, all my flaws are revealed?
I got a taste in my mouth while I despair grabs
Is it something so good, they simply can no longer work more?
Then love, love tear us again ...

I love this one song, I think that deliberately lirica tells us much of his state of mind while listening to his voice and the song can participate in a bit of this desolation.
